ChatGPT Ads Are Now Live
What nonprofits should know.
If you use the free version of ChatGPT, you may have noticed something new at the bottom of some answers. A small card marked as sponsored. OpenAI has started selling advertising inside ChatGPT. In just a few months, it has gone from a small test in the United States to a platform open to advertisers in around 60 countries.
It’s still very early. OpenAI’s Ads Manager is officially in beta, and there are no public benchmarks yet for what good results look like. Even so, more and more people turn to ChatGPT to ask where to volunteer, which organizations help with a specific issue, or what services are available near them. That makes it worth understanding what this new channel is and whether it could have a place in your nonprofit’s marketing.
What Are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are paid ads that appear below ChatGPT’s answer. Each ad shows the advertiser’s name and logo, a short headline, a short description, an image, and a link to a landing page. Ads are clearly labeled as sponsored and kept visually separate from the answer itself. OpenAI states that ads don’t influence what ChatGPT says and that advertisers can’t see anyone’s conversations.
Not everyone sees them. Ads are shown only to people on the Free and Go plans. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans don’t see ads, and neither do accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18. So when you think about reach, think about free users, not everyone who uses ChatGPT.
Where Are ChatGPT Ads Available?
OpenAI began testing ads in the United States in February 2026 and opened its self-serve Ads Manager to US advertisers in May. The rollout then continued to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, followed by Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea in August.

On August 24, 2026, ads went live in 31 European countries, all 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Since August 31, organizations in these countries can create campaigns themselves in Ads Manager. OpenAI has since opened self-service access in parts of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa as well, bringing the total to 63 countries. The full list is in OpenAI’s Ads Manager Availability page, and is still changing.
How Do ChatGPT Ads Work?
If you’re used to Google Ads, the biggest difference is that there are no keywords to bid on. Instead, the ad system looks at the context of the conversation and chooses the ad that seems most relevant to what the person is asking about.
Advertisers guide this with context hints. These are short descriptions, set at the ad group level, of the topics and conversations where your offer could be useful. OpenAI is clear that context hints are not exact-match keywords and don’t guarantee your ad will appear in a specific conversation. The system also weighs your headline, description, and landing page.
A few other things worth knowing:
- Bidding and payment: ads compete in an auction that rewards relevance, not just the highest bid. You can pay for impressions or clicks, or optimize toward conversions (you still pay for clicks or impressions, not for the conversions themselves). For click campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3-$5 per click.
- Measurement: OpenAI offers a tracking pixel and a Conversions API, and you can add UTM parameters to see ChatGPT traffic in your own analytics. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC, CPM and conversions.
- What’s coming: OpenAI is testing “Sponsored Agents” with selected US advertisers. After seeing an ad, a person can start a separate, labeled conversation with the organization’s own agent and ask follow-up questions. Ads Manager is also adding AI help with writing ads and adapting them to the conversation.
A Different Way Of Writing Ads
By the time someone sees your ad, ChatGPT has already answered their question. A classic search-style ad (“Donate Now”, “Learn More About Us”) has little to add at that point. The ads that fit this environment best are the ones that answer the person’s next question.
For example, someone asks ChatGPT how they can volunteer at a food bank near them and gets a general list of options. An ad from a local food bank that explains what a first volunteer shift looks like, or how to sign up for the next orientation, continues that conversation instead of interrupting it.
How Could Nonprofits Use ChatGPT Ads?
We see a few areas where this channel could make sense for nonprofits:
- Volunteer recruitment: reaching people who are asking how to get involved with a cause.
- Programs & services: classes, support programs, events, or services people are actively looking for.
- Education & awareness: pointing people to helpful guides and resources on your site.
- Fundraising: possible, but worth testing carefully before committing a larger budget.
There are also limits to keep in mind. Political ads are not allowed, including ads about elections and public policy, and neither are ads that meaningfully reference sensitive social issues such as immigration, race, religion, abortion or gender identity. This may affect advocacy and faith-based organizations. Health services ads are generally not allowed outside the US, and ads don’t appear next to conversations about personal health, mental health, or politics. It’s a good idea to check OpenAI’s ad policies before planning a campaign.
Budget is the other consideration. This is paid advertising, not a grant program like Google Ad Grants, so any test needs its own budget. If you decide to try it, start small, agree on the goal in advance, and give the campaign several weeks before judging it. Beyond the numbers in Ads Manager, also watch your website analytics and whether more people search for your organization by name.
Should You Try It?
ChatGPT Ads are new, still changing, and not right for every organization. They do offer a chance to reach people at the moment they’re looking for ways to help or for the services you provide. If that sounds like your audience, a small, well-measured test can tell you a lot.

FAQs
Can nonprofits advertise on ChatGPT?
Possibly, depending on what you promote. During this early phase, OpenAI focuses on categories like local services, experiences, digital products and education. Nonprofits aren’t named as a separate category. Political ads, including ads about elections and public policy, are not allowed. Neither are ads that meaningfully reference sensitive social issues such as immigration, race, religion, abortion or gender identity. We recommend reviewing OpenAI’s ad policies before you plan a campaign.
Is ChatGPT advertising available in my country?
Self-service advertising is currently available in 63 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and all EU member states. To use it, the organization that advertises and pays for the ads must be based in a country on OpenAI’s official availability list. The list is still growing, so it’s worth checking regularly.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?
You set your own budget and your maximum bid. You can pay for impressions or for clicks. For click campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3-$5 per click.
Is there a free program like Google Ad Grants?
No. ChatGPT Ads are paid advertising, so any campaign needs its own budget. OpenAI’s nonprofit program offers discounts on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans, not advertising credits. If your organization uses Google Ad Grants, a ChatGPT campaign would run separately from your grant account.
Can an agency set up our account for us?
Your organization needs to create its own Ads Manager account, because OpenAI doesn’t allow agencies to open accounts on a client’s behalf. We can guide you through the setup and help with tracking, strategy, and writing your ads.
